In the 2009-2010 period, the Consortia of Ethnic Minority Organisations (COEMO) marked a decade of dedicated service, continuing its mission to strengthen the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) voluntary sector across West Yorkshire. COEMO's efforts have been instrumental in promoting equitable outcomes for all communities in the region.

Key Achievements

  • Support to Frontline Organisations: COEMO provided infrastructure support to over 120 BME community groups across the district, assisting with capacity building, funding acquisition, and organisational development.

  • Community Cohesion Initiatives: The organisation brought together eight diverse community organisations to deliver the Community Cohesion Programme as part of Bradford Council’s initiatives, commencing activities to strengthen community cohesion.

  • Training and Development: COEMO conducted various training sessions, including Health in the Workplace, Employment Law, Disability Awareness, Management Committee Training, and Quality Assurance, benefiting both staff and volunteers.

  • Volunteer Progression: Four volunteers trained by COEMO progressed to high-skilled jobs within the district, showcasing the effectiveness of the organisation’s development programmes.

Community Impact

COEMO’s work has significantly impacted the BME communities in Bradford, a district with a growing population nearing 500,000, where over 22% are from ethnic minorities. The organisation’s efforts have been crucial in addressing challenges such as higher unemployment rates and educational disparities within these communities.

Recognition

A notable highlight of the year was the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Bradford to Dr. Mohammed Salam, COEMO’s Chief Executive, in recognition of his four decades of dedicated service to the community.
