Coemo chief executive Mohammed Salam says partnership working is one of the group’s key achievements

In 2010, the Consortia of Ethnic Minority Organisations (COEMO) celebrated its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of dedicated service to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Bradford. Established in 2000, COEMO has been instrumental in providing infrastructure support to over 200 BME organisations, assisting with capacity building, funding acquisition, and organisational development.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Mohammed Salam, COEMO has played a pivotal role in promoting equitable outcomes for all communities in the region. The organisation has been involved in various initiatives, including the Community Cohesion Programme, which brought together diverse community organisations to strengthen community cohesion. COEMO has also conducted numerous training sessions on topics such as health in the workplace, employment law, disability awareness, management committee training, and quality assurance, benefiting both staff and volunteers.

A notable highlight of the year was the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Bradford to Dr. Mohammed Salam, in recognition of his four decades of dedicated service to the community.

COEMO’s work has significantly impacted the BME communities in Bradford, a district with a growing population nearing 500,000, where over 22% are from ethnic minorities. The organisation’s efforts have been crucial in addressing challenges such as higher unemployment rates and educational disparities within these communities.

As COEMO looks to the future, it remains committed to its mission of strengthening the BME voluntary sector and promoting equitable outcomes for all communities in Bradford and beyond.
