Understanding the Intersection of Language and Race

Language plays a crucial role in producing racial differences, while the construction of race influences language use. This Race and Language Training aims to deepen the understanding of these dynamics and equip participants with the knowledge to use language in a way that promotes inclusivity and respect.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Acceptable and Unacceptable Language: Participants will learn about the importance of language in shaping perceptions of race and will be guided on what terminology is appropriate to use when referring to different racial and ethnic groups. This includes understanding historical contexts and the evolving nature of language.
  • Addressing Misconceptions: The training will tackle common misconceptions about race and language, providing clarity and correcting false narratives that can perpetuate discrimination.
  • Exploring Intersectionality: Attendees will explore the concept of intersectionality and how overlapping identities (such as race, gender, and class) affect individuals’ experiences. This will help in understanding the complexity of discrimination and privilege.
  • Recognising and Addressing Microaggressions: The training will identify what constitutes microaggressions, subtle yet harmful behaviours or comments that reinforce racial stereotypes. Participants will learn how to recognise and address these microaggressions effectively.
  • Guidance on Being an Ally: Practical advice will be provided on how to be a supportive ally to people from diverse communities. This includes active listening, standing up against discrimination, and promoting inclusive practices within the organisation.

By the end of this training, participants will be better equipped to use language thoughtfully and respectfully, challenge racial biases, and support a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.
